Indiana outhit Southmoreland 11-5 but still needed a three-run rally in the seventh inning to edge the Scotties, 7-5, in a WPIAL non-section softball game in Alverton on Monday.
The Scotties led 5-4 before Indiana scored three runs on four hits in the top of the seventh. Adrian Smith ripped a two-run double to score Brianna Dillon and Holli Sottile and give Indiana a 6-5 lead. Sara Freehling made it 7-5 by banging out a single that scored Smith.
“We were hitting the ball hard all game,” Indiana coach Harold Wilson said. “We started off again in the seventh with three straight hard line drives, all of which ended up in runs. We’re starting to come around a little bit.”
Smith, who finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, struck out 12, walked two and allowed five hits in a complete-game win.
Sottile finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and three runs scored, and Dillon went 2-for-4.
Indiana (2-4) travels to Mars today.
MARION CENTER 10, PURCHASE LINE 1: Marion Center banged out 12 hits and got another superb pitching effort from ace Megan Risinger to earn a lopsided win over visiting Purchase Line in a Heritage Conference game.
Risinger, who also singled and doubled, fired a two-hitter, striking out 16 and walking none. Risinger has struck out 48 and allowed 11 hits in three games this year.
“I can’t say enough about her,” Marion Center coach Ed Peterson said. “But what can you really say about a girl who works so hard and then comes out on the field and reaps the benefits? I’m just glad she’s on our side, I’ll tell you that.”
Kimmi Donaldson singled twice, doubled and drove in three runs to pace the Stingers. Katie Dotts and Karlie Snyder each singled twice, and Morgan Tonkin doubled and drove in two runs.
April Elling cracked a solo homer to lead Purchase Line.
Marion Center (3-0) plays host to United on Wednesday, and Purchase Line (1-4) travels to Northern Cambria on Friday.
FORD CITY 10, APOLLO-RIDGE 7: Ford City bolted to an 8-0 lead and then held off a late surge from winless Apollo-Ridge to earn a win in a WPIAL Section 3-AA game in Spring Church.
Sammy Geracia tripled, smacked a three-run homer, drove in four runs and scored two runs to lead Apollo-Ridge. Taylor Dilick doubled and drove in two runs.
Apollo-Ridge (0-5) plays host to Shady Side Academy today.
REDBANK VALLEY 4, WEST SHAMOKIN 2: Host Redbank Valley plated the game’s last four runs to notch a come-from-behind win over West Shamokin in a non-league game.
With the game knotted 2-2, Redbank Valley plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Belle McIlwain led West Shamokin with a pair of singles.
West Shamokin (2-6) plays host to Valley today.
