The IUP baseball team capped a week full of sweeps with another one Monday, this time off the diamond.
Sophomore Kyle Zaorski was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division pitcher of the week, and senior Robbie Zinsmeister snagged the player of the week distinction as IUP players swept the weekly awards.
Zaorski made one start last week, tossing a complete game shutout in a 10-0 win over Clarion as part of IUP’s doubleheader sweep Sunday. He gave up two hits in seven innings with one walk and struck out 10.
IUP’s leadoff hitter, Zinsmeister hit .478 (11-for-23) with a 1.087 slugging percentage to power IUP to a 6-0 week, which included a doubleheader sweep of Mansfield and a four-game weekend sweep of Clarion. Eight of his 11 hits went for bases, including four triples. He has a nine-game hitting streak.
Like IUP, Slippery Rock is at 6-6 in the division, and the teams are scheduled to play a four-game set Friday and Saturday.
Also, today’s scheduled home doubleheader against Bloomsburg has been postponed, and a makeup date has not been determined.
TENNIS: Senior Emilia Osborne was named the PSAC West athlete of the Week, becoming the third IUP player in four weeks to win the weekly award.
A native of England, Osborne went 8-0 last week, winning four singles matches and combining with Tanya Timko to win four doubles matches as IUP went 4-0 and ended the regular season on a 12-match winning streak.
Osborne is on a six-match winning streak in singles play. Osborne and Timko lead the team with 22 doubles wins, including 10 straight.
Timko was named the PSAC West athlete of the week for the week of April 1, and Katie Eaton earned the distinction for the week of March 25.
IUP (15-6) was scheduled to begin the PSAC playoffs today at home against Mercyhurst, but the watch was moved to Wednesday.
IUP’s Maple Street Courts will also serve as the host site for this weekend’s PSAC men’s and women’s team championships, which includes Friday’s semifinal rounds and Saturday’s championship matches.
