I must take umbrage with the recent letter by Angela DonGiovanni, “Justice for all includes same-sex couples.”
First, I do agree that we all enjoy personal freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution.
I do not agree that same-sex marriages have nothing to do with religion, since our country was founded upon “Judeo-Christian” principles. I, for one, cannot accept and honor all religions as some of them have all kinds of aberrations, for example, indulging in polygamy, incest, pedophilia and even bestiality.
Most Americans believe that God created a man and a woman for the purpose of procreation and conjugal love, not to mention raising the offspring they produce.
Then, too, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the biblical admonitions applying to all Christians, which explains the strong belief we hold against homosexual unions! Jesus said, “... everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:28
Or, to quote St. Paul, “... neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals ... will inherit the kingdom of God.” 1Corinthians 6:9-10.
These two quotes are a very strong condemnation against homosexuals, but we must bear in mind that the Scriptures are virtually filled with such admonitions against homosexuality.
It might also be interesting to point out that homosexual behavior has been condemned long before Christianity ever existed, simply because it does not promote the health and well-being of the community and does not lead to replacing the population.
It is true, as Ms. DonGiovanni wrote, that “we cannot expect everyone to subscribe to our own individual beliefs,” but by the same token do we as Americans have to pass laws that are contrary to everything that we have held dear from the foundation of our country?
