HS BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Trojans shred United in twinbill

Saltsburg piled up a combined 22 hits and 31 runs in two games and swept United in a Heritage Conference baseball doubleheader Thursday in Armagh.

The Trojans won the first game, 13-3, and the second game, 18-1.

In Game 1, Saltsburg collected 13 hits and enforced the mercy rule after five innings.

Steve Richards led the Trojans by going 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs.

Tanner Yard went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Mitchel Yard finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Adam Deruelle doubled and drove in a run.

Lucas Mowery had two hits, including a double, Doug Pollack drove in two runs, and Ian Satler added an RBI.

Mitchel Yard tossed a three-hitter, striking out six and walked three.

Kolt Jarvis had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run to lead United.

In Game 2, Saltsburg smacked three home runs and scored 15 runs in the top of the third to enforce the mercy rule.

Mitchel Yard hit a two-run homer, Richards cranked a solo homer and drove in three runs, and Brody Bieda belted a two-run homer.

Satler had two hits and drove in two runs, and Pollack drove in two runs.

Mowery struck out one and allowed six hits in a complete-game win.

Weylon McGeary had two hits to pace United.

Both teams play at home Monday. United (1-6) plays host to Northern Cambria, and Saltsburg welcomes Penns Manor.


GREENSBURG SALEM 10, DERRY 2: Greensburg Salem knocked the wind out of Derry early and never looked back en route to an easy win in a WPIAL 2-AAA game at Grandview Field.

Despite getting just one hit, the Lions capitalized on two Derry errors to jump out to a 5-0 lead in the first.

Derry, which outhit Greensburg Salem 9-7, scored twice in the second to pull within 5-2, but the Trojans got no closer.

Ryan Rick had three hits and an RBI for Derry. Johnny Panizzi had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.

Losing pitcher Rob Hebenthal struck out seven and walked five in four innings.

Derry (5-3, 4-2) welcomes Laurel Highlands on Monday.


APOLLO-RIDGE 9, BURRELL 4: Mitchell Johnson drove in the eventual game-winning runs with a homer in the fifth inning, lifting Apollo-Ridge to victory over Burrell in a WPIAL Section 3-AA game in Spring Church.

With two outs in the top of the fifth, Johnson stroked a two-run homer to give the Vikings a 5-4 lead. Apollo-Ridge outhit Burrell, 11-6.

Sam Held ripped three singles to lead Apollo-Ridge.

Delbert Brown struck out four, walked two and allowed six hits in a complete-game win.

Apollo-Ridge (4-7, 1-3) travels to Summit Academy today.
