HS BASEBALL: Derry loses to Penn-Trafford

DERRY — Visiting Penn-Trafford rocked three Derry pitchers for 12 runs in the second inning en route to a 18-7 win in a WPIAL non-section game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule at Grandview Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors had six hits and Derry pitchers allowed four walks and four hit batsmen in the bottom of the second.

The Trojans plated two runs in each the fourth and fifth.

Lucas Maloy completed just one inning and gave up eight earned runs on seven hits to suffer the loss.

Danny Owoc earned the win for Penn-Trafford, a Class AAAA team.


Maloy and Rob Hebenthal finished with two hits apiece for Derry, and Connor Wege drove in two runs. Shane Churma and Mark Merlino had three hits each for the Warriors.


Derry (5-4) welcomes Laurel Highlands on Monday.


Indiana boys fare well at meet

WEST MIFFLIN — Darrious Carter won the triple jump, and 11 other Indiana athletes placed in the top eight at the Tri-State Coaches Invitational high school track and field meet Saturday at West Mifflin High School.

Carter took the event with a jump of 43 feet, 9 inches. He also placed seventh in the 400 meters (53.1 seconds) to lead the boys’ team.

Dakota Harper cleared 13-6 in the pole vault for second place, and Corey Denlinger took second in javelin (178-10).

Adam Lenze (800, 2:02), DeQuan West (high jump, 6-0) and Brian Waryck (pole vault, 13-0) each finished in fourth place.

Ryan Louther placed fifth in the mile (4:37) and eighth in the 800 (2:03), and Darnae Clemons took sixth in the high jump (5-9).

Aaryn Gray recorded a throw of 117-9 to finish third in the javelin, and Jessica Hurley placed fourth in the 400 (1:00.85) for the girls’ team.

The Indiana boys recorded 51 points as a team, but the Indians won’t know until today if they placed as a team. The girls collected 11 points.

Indiana welcomes Derry on Tuesday.

Indiana to hold benefit game

The Indiana High School softball team will hold its fourth annual Under the Lights Charity Game at 7 p.m. Monday at the Indiana Little League Complex.

Proceeds benefit the Indiana Little League softball teams. Admission donations will be collected, and a bake sale will be held.

Also, the softball team will hold a charity car wash at The Meadows Original Frozen Custard store from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. Community Day will be held at Hoss’s Steak and Sea House on Friday, May 10.
