SALTSBURG — Saltsburg High School took first place at the Family and Consumer Sciences Heritage Conference cook-off on April 5.
The cook-off was held at Northern Cambria High School with nine teams (schools) competing. Students were given 1ﾽ hours to plan and implement a meal based on secret ingredients.
The Saltsburg team made chicken empanadas served with fresh salsa, lemonade and bananas foster crepes for dessert.
Bobbiesue Mertens, who was there for her second year, said, “It was stressful knowing the judges were behind us, but I felt confident after the dish was made.”
Judging consisted of following My Plate guidelines, sanitation, appearance, table setting, teamwork, marketability and taste. Members of the team were Mertens, Ginae Bruzda, Haley Mascarello and Ali Brown.
