DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Stars chose Jim Nill to replace fired general manager Joe Nieuwendyk, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday night because the move hadn’t been announced.
Dallas fired Nieuwendyk on Sunday after four seasons with two coaches and no playoff appearances. The Stars finished their season 22-22-4 Saturday without earning a spot in the playoffs for the fifth season in a row.
Sacco fired by Avalanche
DENVER (AP) — Colorado Avalanche coach Joe Sacco was fired Sunday after the team missed the playoffs for the third straight season.
The Avs never got on track in the lockout-shortened season and finished last in the Western Conference.
Sacco was in his fourth season in charge of Colorado and wound up with a 130-134-30 mark. He had one year left on his contract.
Miami’s Larkin to enter draft
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Miami guard Shane Larkin said he will forgo his final two years of college eligibility and enter the NBA draft.
Larkin averaged 14.5 points and 4.6 assists this season for the Hurricanes, who won 29 games, climbed as high as No. 2 in The Associated Press Top 25 and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.
Larkin’s decision means Miami will be without its top six scorers from this season when it takes the court next fall.
Jordan marries former model
UNDATED (AP) — Michael Jordan got married over the weekend, with Tiger Woods, Spike Lee and Patrick Ewing among those attending the NBA Hall of Famer’s wedding in Palm Beach, Fla.
Jordan married 35-year-old former model Yvette Prieto on Saturday.
Jordan, 50, owns the Charlotte Bobcats.
Jordan had three children with former wife Juanita Vanoy. The couple’s divorce was finalized in December 2006.
LSU’s Hill arrested again
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — LSU’s top running back, Jeremy Hill, already on probation in connection with a 2011 arrest, was arrested again early Saturday morning after allegedly punching another man in the side of the head outside a Baton Rouge bar near campus.
Nadal comeback stays on track
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Rafael Nadal won the Barcelona Open for the eighth time Sunday, defeating Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-3 for his fourth title of the year.
This latest victory, with next month’s French Open approaching, is a promising sign that Nadal is getting back to full strength from a knee injury that sidelined him since last summer.
