Olivia Sipos

Olivia Sipos, of Indiana, is one of 16 students inducted recently into the Thiel College chapter of Lambda Sigma, the national honor society for second-year men and women dedicated to the purpose of fostering leadership, scholarship, fellowship and the spirit of service among college students, and to promoting the interests of the college or university,

Sipos is an international business major at the college, located in Greenville.

Evan Fry

Evan Charles Fry, an accounting major at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, was recently recognized as the 2013 Junior Class RealWorld Action program winner.

He was recognized for his achievement in four levels of engagement: career, professional and personal development; campus engagement; civic and community engagement; and global engagement.

Along with the certificate and trophy recognition, Fry received a $1,000 scholarship. He is the son of Lynn and Carol Fry, of Indiana.

Sheri Smay

MAHAFFEY — Sheri Smay, of Mahaffey, recently graduated from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management with a minor in finance.

Lecinda Yevchak

COMMODORE — Lecinda Yevchak, of Commodore, graduated in December with a doctor of philosophy degree from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Jennifer Beatty

Jennifer Beatty, of Indiana, an education and human development major, was named to the fall dean’s list at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Kevin Mullen

Kevin Mullen, of Indiana, was named to the dean’s list for academic achievement for the fall semester at The University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y.

Mullen, a freshman at the university, is the son of Ray Mullen and Peggy Mullen, and a graduate of Indiana Area Senior High School.

Maggie Slawson

ARMAGH — Maggie Slawson, of Armagh, has been accepted to and plans to attend Lycoming College in Williamsport for the fall 2013 semester.

She is the daughter of Patricia Slawson.

A student at United High School, she has been active in varsity track, varsity volleyball, Junior Olympics, student council, chorus, marching band, Running Club and Bible Club. She also has been on the honor roll, was a student of the month, student council president and a member of the Tri-M Honor Society at the school.

Slawson has received several honors for track and field and volleyball during her high school career.

Honor society

The following area students were recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi: Kimberly Buzzelli, of Creekside, and Nickolas Bruner, of Avonmore.

Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Phi Kappa Phi inducts approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni annually. The Society has chapters in more than 300 select colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines.

Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors.

Katey Williams

SHELOCTA — Katey Ann Williams, of Shelocta, graduated from Thiel College, in Greenville, during the commencement ceremony held recently in Thiel’s William A. Passavant Center.

Williams graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business communication and departmental honors, and was a recipient of the Dean’s Key. Williams also earned Student of the Month honors and was a member of the senior class gift committee.

Students who received the honor of summa cum laude graduated with a grade-point average of 3.8-4.0; students who received the honor of magna cum laude graduated with a GPA of 3.60-3.79; and students who received the honor of cum laude graduated with a GPA of 3.4-3.59. Dean’s Key is awarded to those students who were on the dean’s list for all eight semesters while at Thiel.

Bryan McGeary

Bryan McGeary, of Indiana, graduated in December with a doctor of philosophy degree from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.
