Burrell Township to hear grant ideas from public

BLACK LICK — The Burrell Township board of supervisors plans to convene earlier than usual for the monthly business meeting on June 19 to take public comment on the township’s grant project priorities.

The supervisors said Wednesday that the Indiana County Office of Planning and Development requires the hearing for determining how to spend the township’s allotment of community development block grant funds, estimated this year to be about $68,000.

Supervisors John Shields and Larry Henry said a waterline replacement project for the Fairfield Heights neighborhood — a patch of just over a dozen homes on four streets on the southeast edge of Black Lick — has been the priority. They said current grant money is paying for design work and construction ought to start in 2015.

The supervisors approved documents authorizing the planning office to administer the project.

In other business Wednesday, the supervisors:

• Received from the county planning office a survey requesting information about stormwater drainage problems in the township. The planning office is preparing a countywide stormwater management plan to address flooding, erosion and other issues in six major watershed areas in Indiana County, according to Chief Planner Jeff Raykes.

• Reported that the township awarded contracts for road maintenance materials and supplies at a special meeting on May 8. Low bids were accepted from Hanson Group for six kinds of paving stones, American Rock Salt Co. for road salt, Derry Construction Co. for asphalt, Russell Standard Co. for patching material, Suite-Kote for liquid paving materials and Davis Trucking for hauling materials from suppliers to the work sites.

• Reported that the Peoples TWP gas company has submitted notice of a pipeline replacement project within wetlands near Toms Run, as required by the state Department of Environmental Protection in a permit application.

• Reported that the Black Lick volunteer fire department has several fundraisers planned including a food auction by the ladies auxiliary on May 25 at the fire hall, a submarine sandwich sale June 1 and a basket bash June 2 at the fire hall.
