In an early-season clash for first place, unbeaten Blairsville stranded 13 runners but used a huge rally in the top of the seventh inning to storm back and nip Amfire Mining, 5-4, in an Indiana County League baseball game at Keystone Rehab Field on Tuesday.
The Colts trailed 4-1 entering the seventh but scored four runs on four hits and a walk to take a 5-4 lead. Bobby Thompson cracked a two-run single to score Joe Culler and Ben Doak, cutting the Indies’ lead to 4-3. Scott Harsh then smacked a two-run single that plated Nick Draghi and Thompson with the tying and go-ahead runs.
“This is the third or fourth time this year that we’ve had to come back in the last inning or in extra innings. We’re starting to grow accustomed to it,” Colts player-manager Culler said. “We put guys on base and we did it when it counted, again. It’s always nerve-wracking, but it’s great to win a game like that early in the season.”
Culler, Thompson and Ben Doak each singled twice for Blairsville.
Harsh struck out three, walked one and allowed three hits in four innings of relief to pick up the win. Jarred Pennavaria allowed one hit in the first three innings.
Nathan Baker struck out five and walked two in the first six innings for Amfire Mining.
Both teams play Thursday. Blairsville (5-0) plays host to Greensburg, and Amfire Mining (3-2) welcomes West Lebanon.
APOLLO 8, NEW DERRY 4: Apollo jumped out to a 5-0 lead and outhit New Derry 13-7 to earn its first win of the year at New Derry Field.
Apollo led 1-0 before plating three runs on three hits and two errors in the top of the second inning to build a 4-0 lead. Phil Shallenberger sparked the onslaught with a two-run double.
Shallenberger struck out nine, walked one and allowed seven hits in a complete-game win. He also went 2-for-4.
Ryan McGonigle paced Apollo by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Ken Johnson and Mike Bell each singled twice.
Vince Murphy powered New Derry by going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Ryan Hauser singled and drove in two runs.
Both teams play Thursday. Apollo (1-4) plays host to Trendy Trades, and New Derry (1-4) travels to Bovard.
WEST LEBANON 12, GREENSBURG 1: West Lebanon piled up 12 hits and scored the game’s last eight runs to earn a lopsided win over Greensburg at Bertolino Field.
West Lebanon grinded its way to a 5-1 lead before pulling away by plating seven runs on four hits, three walks and an error in the seventh inning.
Shane Wingard paced West Lebanon by going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Anthony Rebyanski finished 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, and Matt Rebyanski went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Zack Long singled, doubled and drove in a run, and Josh Mottorn singled and doubled.
Garrett Mack struck out five and allowed five hits in five innings to notch the win.
Both teams play Thursday. West Lebanon (3-2) travels to Amfire Mining, and Greensburg (3-2) visits Blairsville.
