IUP: Hawks improve by 10 strokes

HERSHEY — The IUP golf team improved by 10 strokes Tuesday and still had some work to do today to advance in the NCAA Division II Championship at Hershey Country Club.

IUP moved up one spot to 18th going into today’s third round. The top eight teams after the third round advance to a match-play format Thursday to determine the champion.

The Crimson Hawks shot a 20-over 304 in the second round and stand at 50-over 618 for the tournament. They are 21 strokes out of eighth place.

IUP’s Zack Kempa is tied for 15th at 4-over 146, eight strokes off the lead. He shot a 3-over 74 in the second round, finishing with four birdies.

Sean Sweithelm shot a 5-over 76 on Tuesday and stands at 13-over 155. Kenny Sames and Jack Owen each shot a 6-over 77 and have two-day scores of 10 over and 11 over, respectively. Derek Baker shot an 8-over 79 and sits at 22 over.

Barry (Fla.) maintained the lead at 4-over 572. Rob Damschen from Cal State-Stanislaus has the individual lead at 4-under 138.

The third round began this morning.
