INDIANAPOLIS — Alison Simmons, an Indiana High School graduate and freshman at Bates College, earned silver and bronze medals Saturday at the NCAA Division III Women’s Rowing Championships at Eagle Creek Park.
Bates’ first varsity eight boat finished second, and the second varsity eight on which Simmons rowed placed third. As a team, Bates finished second for the fifth straight year in a field that consisted of six teams from schools that field a first varsity eight and a second varsity eight boat, and two at-large teams that field a first varsity eight boat only.
The two-day competition was contested by Bates, Ithaca, Trinity, Puget Sound, Washington (Md), Wellesely, Williams and Williams Smith.
Bates received an NCAA bid after placing third in the Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Rowing Championships on May 4 and the ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships on May 12 at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
The New England Rowing Championships was a regional regatta consisting of 28 schools from six states in New England. The National Invitational Rowing Championships was a national qualifying regatta consisting of 22 schools from eight states. Simmons’ second varsity eight placed second in New England event and third in the national event.
This summer, Simmons will train in her scull on the Yellow Creek State Park reservoir and compete in the lightweight single event at the U23 USRowing World Trials Championships in New Jersey and the Royal Canadian Henley regatta in Ontario.
