Area set for huge softball tournament

More than 100 girls’ softball teams will converge on Indiana this weekend for the Indiana Summer Showcase Tournament.

The tournament scheduled for Friday through Sunday features 107 teams in nine divisions playing 305 games on 21 fields at 13 sites. Games are being played in Indiana, White Township, Elderton, Creekside, Homer City, Shelocta, Clymer and Armstrong Township.

Divisions are 10-and-under, 12-and-under A and B, 14-and-under A and B, 16-and-under A and B and 18-and-under A and B. Teams from Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware and Virginia are scheduled to participate.

Each team will play four pool games Friday and Saturday to determine seeding in a single-elimination championship tournament on Sunday.

In addition, a college showcase will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at Optimist Park. The showcase features 112 players that will perform for college coaches.

The tournament is being conducted by the IUP women’s softball program in conjunction with the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce and the Indiana Optimist Club.
