WEST LEBANON — Apollo used a dominant pitching effort from Phil Shallenberger and big bursts in the third and fourth innings to outlast West Lebanon for a 5-2 win in an Indiana County League baseball game Thursday at Bertolino Field.
Thursday’s other three games were postponed due to rain.
Apollo was clinging to a 1-0 advantage before plating two runs on three hits in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Jake Shaffer sparked the onslaught with an RBI single, and Ken Johnson followed with an RBI double.
An inning later, Apollo extended its lead to 5-1 by scoring two runs on two walks, a hit and a wild pitch. John Shaffer hit an RBI single to fuel the rally.
In the meantime, Shallenberger scattered five hits in a complete-game win. Shallenberger struck out 10 and walked two.
“He was throwing strikes and keeping it down in the zone all night,” Apollo manager Andy Proch said. “He has very good control and he used it well tonight. He seemed to have just about everybody’s number in this game.”
Mike Percic led West Lebanon by going 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Tyler Beitel finished 2-for-4.
Losing pitcher Garrett Mack struck out four and allowed five hits in six innings.
Both teams play Sunday. Apollo (6-8) plays host to Greensburg, and West Lebanon (7-4) travels to New Derry.
