Blairsville took an early lead and won a race with an approaching storm, defeating Apollo, 3-1, in an Indiana County League baseball game called after 4 1/2 innings due to rain Tuesday evening at One River Field in Blairsville.

With the Colts up 3-1 going into the bottom of the fourth, Blairsville player/manager Joe Culler instructed his batters to make quick outs with bunts and intentional missed swings in hopes of getting in an official game. Pitcher Nick Draghi set Apollo down in the top of the fifth to secure the victory.

“Draghi was throwing a lot of strikes, so I had the confidence he could get three quick outs,” Culler said. “Once we got the third out, the rain started coming down.”

Draghi had five strikeouts and did not walk a batter in five innings, picking up the win in Blairsville’s sixth straight victory.

Ben Doak singled to score Jarred Pennavaria to open up the scoring in the first inning, and Dan Leonard plated Ben Doak and David Doak with another single.

Ryan McGonigle went 2-for-2 with a double to pace Apollo.

Losing pitcher Matt Bier struck out one and walked one in three innings.

Blairsville (14-3-1) travels to West Lebanon on Thursday, and Apollo (6-13) visits Trendy Trades on Sunday.
