INDIANA COUNTY YOUTH LEGION: Playoff field finalized; Clymer Legion misses postseason
Clymer Legion lost out on an Indiana County Youth Legion baseball playoff berth, losing to Walbeck Insurance on Sunday as the league’s four-team playoff field was finalized. The best-of-three semifinal series begin tonight.
Top-seeded I-Medical (18-2) will face Young Township (12-8), though Game 1 will be at West Lebanon’s Bertolino Field at 6 p.m. today because I-Medical’s field in Punxsutawney is unavailable.
In the other semifinal series, second-seeded Kovacik Insurance (17-3) plays host to S.W. Jack (15-5) at 6 p.m. at WyoTech Park in Blairsville.
Clymer Legion (11-9) entered Sunday in fourth place, but had to beat both Walbeck Insurance (9-11) and Kovacik Insurance in Sunday’s games to maintain its playoff position.
Walbeck sank Clymer Legion in the first game though, with a 6-3 victory at Homer City’s First Commonwealth Field. Winning pitcher Steven Novak allowed just three hits, striking out five and walking one.
Alex Arone went 2-for-3 to lead Walbeck.
Cy Lieb and Clayton Stupic each hit doubles for Clymer Legion. Lieb went 2-for-3.
Ron Button struck out two and walked one in two innings and took the loss.
Since Young Township held the tiebreaker over Clymer Legion, the result propelled Young Township into the playoffs.
Clymer Legion lost to Kovacik, 11-4, in its second game, also played in Homer City.
Josh Daugherty had a triple, John Fetchko a double, and Doug Pollock went 2-for-4 to lead Kovacik. Rick Shirley struck out three and walked two in four innings to pick up the win.
Kyle Long did not have a strikeout or walk, taking the loss for Clymer Legion.
The semifinals are scheduled to run each night through Wednesday, should a Game 3 be necessary in either series. Should both semifinals end in two-game sweeps, the championship series will begin Wednesday. Otherwise, it is set to start Thursday.
