Ross Bricklemyer, of Indiana, and his sons, Ross, left, and Scott, right, made their annual western fishing trip last month and ran into an adventure in the Hells Canyon area of the Snake River near the Washington-Oregon border.

After hooking a sturgeon, they took turns reeling in the fish that was estimated at 530 pounds and 9 feet, 11 inches. The situation was complicated because the line had tangled in one of the fish’s gills, meaning they were virtually working on more than 500 pounds of dead weight in the water.

Eventually, their guide, Bryan Miller, of Swiftwater Outfitters, moved the boat out of the swift current and toward shore, where they landed and then released the fish.
