NEW YORK (AP) — Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis, who leads the majors with 33 homers, will be one of eight participants in the Home Run Derby next Monday night during All-Star festivities at Citi Field.
Davis was chosen by American League captain Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees. They will be joined on the AL squad by Detroit Tigers bopper Prince Fielder, who won the event last year and in 2009, and a player yet to be announced. New York Mets star David Wright, the National League captain, selected 20-year-old Washington phenom Bryce Harper along with Colorado outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer. Major League Baseball announced the field Monday — or at least most of it. Cano won the 2011 Home Run Derby in Arizona.
Phils’ Howard out 6-8 weeks
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Phillies slugger Ryan Howard needs surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and will miss at least six to eight weeks.
Howard, the 2006 NL MVP, went on the disabled list Saturday. An MRI Monday confirmed the tear in his knee. A date for surgery hasn’t been set.
The three-time All-Star was hitting .266 with 11 homers and 43 RBIs. He was noticeably limping during games before he was shut down. He said he continued to play through the pain because he thought he could perform.
Howard played his first game last season on July 6 after tearing his left Achilles tendon making the final out in the 2011 NL division series.
Braun returns, but Ramirez out
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers have activated slugger Ryan Braun from the disabled list and placed third baseman Aramis Ramirez on the DL with a nagging left knee injury.
Braun has been out for a month with a bruised right thumb. He was not in the lineup for the opener of a three-game series against Cincinnati, but he planned to test his hand again in batting practice and could be available to pinch-hit.
The 2011 NL MVP is batting .304 with nine homers and 36 RBIs in 57 games this season.
Ramirez sprained his left knee on April 5 and was placed on the DL the next day. He was sidelined for a month, but the injury has lingered.
The move for Ramirez is retroactive to Sunday.

Jeter tested the left ankle several times while playing the field for just the second time and was part of four defensive plays.
