Amfire Mining jumped out to an early lead in a pitchers’ duel and handcuffed West Lebanon to score a 3-1 victory and forge a tie at a game apiece in their Indiana County League baseball best-of-three quarterfinal-round playoff series Wednesday at Keystone Rehab Field.
Fourth-seeded West Lebanon (13-15-1) earned an 8-0 win over the fifth-seeded Indies (13-11-1) in the first game of the series Sunday when Matt Rebyanski threw a one-hitter. The third and decisive game of the best-of-three series will be played today at West Lebanon. The winner advances to play Blairsville, the regular-season champion, in a semifinal series that begins Sunday.
Dylan Songer put the Indies on the board first when he ripped an RBI double to score Troy Trimble in the bottom of the first inning.
The following inning, Trimble ripped a two-out, bases-loaded single that plated Dom Peluso and Mark Thomchick, extending Amfire Mining’s lead to 3-0.
“We knew they were going to come out and be just as tough as they were Sunday,” Amfire Mining player-manager Ryan Davies said. “Nothing against (Tyler) Beitel, he’s not quite Matt Rebyanski. We knew we could hit him and we wanted to get up on them early and put our foot down on our field. With Dom on the mound, we knew we just had to get him a lead and he’d relax and throw strikes.”
Peluso tossed a four-hitter, allowing a run on an RBI single from Beitel in the top of the third. Peluso finished with five strikeouts and three walks.
“He was able to throw strikes and just pitch to contact, and the defense just played a fantastic game behind him. We had no errors,” Davies said.
Songer finished 2-for-3 to lead Amfire Mining.
Beitel struck out six, walked two and allowed six hits in a complete-game effort.
