CROP Hunger Walk scheduled for Oct. 20

Each year some 2,000 communities across the U.S. join in locally organized, interfaith CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Hunger Walks that help support the work of Church World Service both around the world and here at home.

Indiana County churches are invited to join in the CROP Hunger Walk for Indiana County scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 20.

The CROP Hunger Walk will begin at Graystone Presbyterian Church, 640 Church St., and will follow either a 1.6- or 2.1-mile route for adults. A separate mini-walk for children will begin with a picnic and with fun activities along the way. The walk is at an easy pace and is more about calling attention to world and local hunger while having a pleasant fall walk around Indiana than about grueling exercise.

In fact, participants may opt to rock (on rocking chairs provided) on Calvary’s front portico, instead of walking. Light refreshments will be served at Calvary Presbyterian Church, corner of Seventh and Church streets, following the walk.

The CROP Hunger Walk had small beginnings in Indiana County almost 20 years ago but has grown in its number of participants and total dollars raised. Last year a total of $11,115 was collected by approximately 100 participants.

More than $2,773 was forwarded to Indiana County Community Action (ICCAP) and the balance collected was sent to Church World Service to help combat world hunger.

The Indiana steering committee for 2013 is setting its goal even higher this year in terms of number of churches participating, dollars raised and number of walkers.

Any church can get involved with as little as one walker, or the whole congregation participating.

If your church is searching for a worthwhile mission project, one that is nearby and one that is good for all ages, contact Becky Becker, director of Community Assistance and Mission at Calvary Presbyterian Church, at (724) 463-9197 for a basic packet of materials to get started.

Ed Kennedy of Trinity United Methodist Church is also willing to present a “Minute for Mission” at your church.
