SALTSBURG 6, BISHOP CARROLL 5: Saltsburg, its baseball program dormant for 54 years before last season, opened the District 6 Class A playoffs by beating Bishop Carroll, 6-5, in a first-round game Thursday.

The Trojans, the No. 8 seed, plated five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull ahead, 6-4, and pitcher Ian Satler held the lead against the ninth-seeded Huskies.

Mitchel Yard slugged a home run and scored twice, and Brody Bieda added a triple. Satler and Bryce Zimmerman had two hits each.

Satler struck out three and walked two, allowing just one earned run on six hits in seven innings for the win.

Saltsburg (9-10) advances to face top-seeded and defending state champion Bishop McCort on Monday.


ELSEWHERE: Ligonier Valley defeated Northern Cambria, 4-2, and Cambria Heights bested Marion Center, 6-5, in District 6 Class AA first-round playoff games. No further details were reported.

Ligonier Valley (11-5), the No. 6 seed, advances to face No. 3-seeded Richland on Monday. Northern Cambria finished at 9-11.

Marion Center concluded its season at 9-7.
