FARMINGTON — After posting two under-par rounds on the opening day of the West Penn Open Championship, Ryan Sikora shot a 3-over-par 75 in the final round Tuesday to slip out of the lead, but he still finished second in the event sanctioned by the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association.
Sikora, an IUP graduate and former member of the Crimson Hawks’ golf team, was tied for the lead after the opening 36 holes Monday, with a 9-under total of 135 on the par-72 Mystic Rock course at Nemacolin Woodlands.
With Monday’s 75, Sikora finished at 6-over (210), six strokes behind winner Mike Van Sickle, of Wexford.
Another former IUP golfer, Sean Knapp, shot a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to finish ninth with a 217 total (1 over).
Three area golfers place
ROARING SPRING — Ian Illig, of Homer City, placed fourth in his respective age division and led a group of three area golfers who placed in Tuesday’s North East Junior Golf Tour’s event at Iron Masters Country Club.
Illig fired an 80 and placed fourth in the Oakmont Division for boys 16 to 18.
Roman Tate, of Clymer, fired a 96 and placed sixth in the Pine Valley Division for boys 16 to 18. Frank Bevevino, of Indiana, shot a 100 and finished eighth in the Pine Valley Division for boys 13 to 15.
