ERIE (AP) — A northwestern Pennsylvania man has pleaded no contest to third-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend.
The plea Monday by Jeff Selby, 52, in Erie County Court means that he won’t go to trial. He is set to be sentenced Oct. 1 and could face from 10 to 40 years in prison.
Selby has been jailed since his arrest last November in the death of Mary Smith, 51.
She died three days after police, responding to a report of a fight, found her unconscious in her apartment. The coroner said she suffered from several fractured ribs and multiple bruises but died of a lack of oxygen, indicating she was strangled or suffocated.
In exchange for the no-contest plea, all other charges against Selby were dropped, including aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
