Developer seeks to raze building

ALLENTOWN (AP) — A developer is looking to demolish a historic stone building in eastern Pennsylvania from 1756 to make way for a restaurant, pharmacy and bank.

Almost 2,000 people have signed an online petition in support of saving the 257-year-old King George Inn in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.

New Jersey developer Atul Patel is in the process of purchasing the property from longtime owner Cliff McDermott, whose restaurant there closed last year. The sale is contingent on the approval of zoning variances the developer is requesting. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. That protects it from being taken by eminent domain but not from demolition.

Local lore says it was visited by some of the Founding Fathers and the grounds were used for drills during the Revolutionary War.
