H.S. FOOTBALL: Marion Center 21, Saltsburg 18
SALTSBURG — Marion Center defensive lineman Phil Crook blocked a Steve Richards kick as time expired, helping the Stingers preserve a 21-18 win in a Heritage Conference football game Friday.
Marion Center marched 50 yards on 10 plays late in the fourth quarter to put the Stingers ahead for good. Quarterback Blake Orr scored from 6 yards on a quarterback sweep with 1:23 to make it a 21-18 game.
Saltsburg had three timeouts left and drove to the Marion Center 6 with four seconds to go.
After an incomplete pass on second-and-goal, Richards attempted a 23-yard field goal. But Crook, who was being double-teamed, broke through the line and blocked the kick cleanly to end the game.
Tyler Frassenei put Saltsburg on the board first when he threw a 25-yard touchdown to Lucas Mowery with 5:30 left in the second quarter to make it 6-0.
On the Stingers’ ensuing drive, Noah Hoover capped a seven-play, 66-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown run that gave Marion Center a 7-6 lead.
But Frassenei returned the following kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to give the Trojans a 12-7 lead.
Orr hit Bothell for a 38-yard touchdown on the third play of the third quarter to put the Stingers ahead 13-12.
The Trojans responded on their next drive, mounting an impressive 18-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run from Frassenei with 1:38 left in the third.
Tyler Bendis led Saltsburg with 82 yards rushing on 15 carries. Frassenei tacked on 77 yards on 19 carries, and Richards had 61 yards on 16 attempts.
Bothell paced Marion Center with two catches for 52 yards.
