The IUP women’s volleyball team dropped a pair of season-opening matches, falling to Ashland and Cedarville on the opening day of the Ferris State Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The Crimson Hawks lost to Ashland in three sets in the morning and to Cedarville in four sets later in the day.
Freshmen Kaitlyn Palmer, an Indiana High graduate, and Lindsay Moeller notched 10 kills and 21 assists, respectively, against Cedarville. IUP defeated the Yellow Jackets 25-19 in the first set but dropped the next three, 25-22, 25-21, 25-19.
Lisa Kissell and Indiana High grad Aubree Frye added eight kills apiece. Joie Hrapla and Frye had 13 digs apiece, and Kelly Barnes had 12. Elizabeth Sova had six blocks, Moeller added four, and Meghan Schneider Geneva, Palmer and Kissell each had three.
Ashland swept IUP, 25-14, 25-17, 25-17. Kissell had five kills and four digs, and Moeller had nine assists and eight digs.
IUP plays Missouri-St. Louis and Saginaw Valley State today.
TENNIS: The women’s tennis team split its matches against a pair of Division I teams on the opening day of Towson Tiger Classic.
IUP dropped all five of its matches against Delaware and fared better against Mount St. Mary’s, taking four of the five matches. Tanya Timko, Abby McCormick, Erika Schnaas and Rachel Wood scored singles wins.
The tournament continues today.
