IUP GOLF: Kempa, Hawks win tourney titles

Zack Kempa picked up where he left off after a stellar 2012-13 season, winning Clarion’s Hal Hansen Invitational golf tournament and leading the Crimson Hawks to the tournament title Monday.

Kempa, a senior, led after the first day, shooting a 3-under-par 69. He followed that with a 4-over 76 to edge California’s Matt Cioffi for first place at 1-under 145.

Brady Moran, a freshman, shot a 2-over 74 in the first round and even-par 72 in the second to finish at 2-over 146.

Jack Owen finished at 3-over 147, and Kenny Sames and Maxwell Kirsh each finished at 176.

As a team, IUP shot a 583, finishing 15 strokes ahead of second-place Carnegie Mellon.

IUP plays in the Glade Springs Intercollegiate at Daniels, W.Va., on Monday.
