KINGSTON (AP) — The owner of an excavation company in northeastern Pennsylvania died during a church demolition when part of the building collapsed on him.
It happened around 11:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Name/St. Mary’s Church in Swoyersville, Luzerne County.
Swoyersville police said John Brdaric was working an excavator when part of the building fell and covered the machine and its operator in steel beams and bricks. Brdaric Excavating Co. was the demolition contractor hired to tear down the church.
Police Chief Dave Laposki said workers rushed to free Brdaric, using a saw to cut a beam pinning him inside the excavator.
Authorities said he was rushed to the hospital but died a short time later.
Investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.
