HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: PM's Horwat, LV's Heming win to lead their respective teams
KENWOOD — Penns Manor’s JT Horwat and Ligonier Valley’s Stephanie Heming led the way in Heritage Conference cross country action Wednesday.
Horwat won the boys’ race in 18 minutes, 39 seconds, and Roman Tate finished second in 19:10. No other Comets finished in the top 10.
Tanner Solich led a Ligonier Valley sweep in the fifth through 10th spots to give the Rams a 25-34 win over Penns Manor and a 25-36 win over United. Penns Manor topped United 21-34.
Gaige George led United’s effort with a third-place finish at 19:40, and Noah Bracken came in fourth at 19:47.
In the girls’ meet, Heming cruised to the finish line in 21:58 and led Ligonier Valley to a 15-50 win over Penns Manor and 23-33 win over United. United beat Penns Manor 15-50.
Olivia Miller (third, 23:20) and Gina McKlveen (fourth, 23:48) finished in the top five for the Rams.
Eden Bloom paced United with a second-place finish in 23:17. Ryleigh Ludwig (fifth, 24:21), Hannah Rensko (seventh, 25:15) and Michelle Bloom (ninth, 27:07) also finished in the top 10 for the Lions.
Penns Manor’s Morgan Johnston (26:43) finished eighth.
Penns Manor and Ligonier Valley travel to Altoona’s Mountain Lion Invitational on Saturday. United welcomes Homer-Center and Marion Center on Wednesday.
BLAIRSVILLE’S McLEAN, HOMER-CENTER’S PAYNTER WIN: Blairsville’s Austin McLean and Homer-Center’s Heather Paynter led their respective fields in a high school cross country meet in Homer City on Wednesday.
McLean paced the boys’ field with a time of 18 minutes, 52 seconds, with teammates Ryan Horchar (18:56) and Alex Horchar (18:57) finishing behind him.
Derek Rocks (fifth, 20:16) and Ayrton Lamantia (10th, 21:25) placed in the top 10 for Blairsville.
Chris Woodley was Northern Cambria’s top finisher, placing fourth at 19:50. CJ Wiewiora came in sixth at 20:27.
Homer-Center’s Logan Pollack (21:00) and Jon Hunyady (21:01) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
Blairsville won the meet, 19-38 over Homer-Center. Northern Cambria did not field enough runners for a team score.
In the girls’ meet, Northern Cambria swept the team competition because Blairsville and Homer-Center did not have enough runners for a team score, but Paynter led the field in 21:39.
Northern Cambria’s Allyson Kopera finished second in 22:28, and Blairsville’s Allyson Smathers (24:21) and Taylor Koches (21:34) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Blairsville competes in the Crimson Hawks Invitational at IUP on Saturday. Homer-Center joins Marion Center at United on Wednesday, and Northern Cambria and Purchase Line run at Ligonier Valley on Wednesday.
