HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: Purchase Line outlasts Blairsville

Purchase Line and Blairsville dueled for five games before the Red Dragons came away with a victory in Heritage Conference girls’ volleyball action Thursday.

Purchase Line won on its home court, 28-26, 25-19, 22-25, 17-25, 15-13.

Amy Elling led Purchase Line (3-3) with 10 kills, 10 service points and 43 assists. Jaycelyn Fleming recorded 15 kills, and Kelly Pierce had 12. Mikhala Stover chipped in 10 kills and 11 service points, and Allison Goodlin had 11 service points and eight digs. Kira Smith added 11 digs.

Purchase Line won the junior varsity match, 25-14, 25-12.

Both teams play Tuesday. Purchase Line plays host to Northern Cambria, and Marion Center welcomes Blairsville.


LIGONIER VALLEY 3, UNITED 2: Ligonier Valley rallied in a back-and-forth match to defeat United, 18-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-27, 15-12, in a Heritage Conference match at home.

Rachel Wallace had 14 service points, and Becca Kromel had 10, including five aces, for Ligonier Valley. Taylor Rudnik had seven kills.

Ligonier Valley improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

Ligonier Valley won the junior varsity match, 25-20, 25-19.

United plays at Union on Saturday, and Ligonier Valley visits Hollidaysburg on Monday.


NORTHERN CAMBRIA 3, HOMER-CENTER 1: Northern Cambria topped Homer-Center, 25-14, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15, in a Heritage Conference match at home.

Olivia Zernick and Paige Benton led Northern Cambria in service points, and Lakyn Fornari led the way at the net. Julia Buggey led Homer-Center in service points.

Homer-Center won the junior varsity match, 25-17, 19-25, 17-15.

Northern Cambria (4-1) plays in the Clarion tournament on Saturday, and Homer-Center plays host to United on Monday.


INDIANA 3, DERRY 0: Indiana improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the section by winning at Derry, 25-19, 25-23, 25-20, in a WPIAL Section 3-AA match.

Natalie Cignetti led Indiana with 11 kills, and Aaryn Gray had nine. Helena Dadson had six kills and four blocks.

Derry won the junior varsity match, 2-0.

Indiana plays host to Greensburg Central Catholic on Monday.


CALVARY BAPTIST 3, SLIPPERY ROCK CHRISTIAN 0: Calvary Baptist swept past Slippery Rock Christian, 25-8, 25-19, 25-11, in a non-conference match.

Amy Frick had nine kills and Megan Plants had eight to lead the Patriots. Rachel Covato has 20 service points, and Erica Stevens had 10.

Calvary Baptist (4-2) plays at Mount Zion Christian on Tuesday.
