HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' TENNIS: Indiana's Bujdos, Clawson advances to WPIAL Championships
NEW KENSINGTON — The Indiana doubles team of Lucy Bujdos and Megan Clawson placed second in the WPIAL Section 4-AA girls’ tennis doubles tournament Wednesday at Valley High School.
After receiving a first-round bye, Bujdos and Clawson defeated Kittanning’s Hailey Bigley and Sarah McClafferty, 10-1, in the quarterfinals.
Bujdos and Clawson then beat Valley’s Hannah Albright and Megan Hill, 6-3, 6-3, in the semifinals, before falling to Valley’s Emily Armstrong and Catherine Armstrong, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, in the finals.
Indiana’s Kylie Horvath and Carly Morrow won their first-round match before falling in the quarterfinals.
Bujdos and Clawson advanced to the WPIAL Championships, which will be held Wednesday at Keystone Oaks High School.
ORAZIO, HUNTER ADVANCE FOR DERRY: Derry’s No. 2 doubles team of Jill Orazio and Hunter Hudson placed third in the WPIAL Section 1-AA doubles tournament at Mount Pleasant High School.
Orazio and Hudson defeated Greensburg Central Catholic’s Kate Bryan and Mary Taormina, 5-2, in the opening round. In the quarterfinals, they beat California’s Elizabeth Wohar and Danielle Koehler, 10-2, before falling to Mount Pleasant’s Taylor Bradley and Paige Hertzog, 6-4, 3-0, in the semifinals.
In the third-place consolation match with a berth in the WPIAL Championships on the line, Orazio and Hudson beat Brownsville’s Sari Yuhas and Angie Braznok, 6-1, 6-0.
Derry’s No. 1 doubles team of Natalie Sarnese and Paige Lupyan fell to Yuhas and Braznok, 10-6, in the opening round.
The WPIAL Championships will be held Wednesday at Keystone Oaks High School.
