HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: Blairsville earns sweep of Red Dragons, Lions

The Blairsville boys’ cross country team placed four runners in the top five finishers and raced to a sweep of United and Purchase Line in a Heritage Conference triangular meet Wednesday in Armagh.

Blairsville defeated United, 17-44, and Purchase Line, 21-36. The Purchase Line boys defeated United, 22-33.

There was no team scoring in the girls’ meet because Purchase Line and Blairsville didn’t field enough runners.

Ryan Horchar won the boys’ race with a time of 18 minutes, 56 seconds to lead the Blairsville boys. Alex Horchar placed second, Austin McLain took fourth, and Derek Rocks finished fifth.

Taylor Antisdel finished third to pace Purchase Line. Dan Learn took seventh, Caleb Brady placed ninth, and Nathan Moore finished 10th.

Noah Bracken led United (1-6) by finishing sixth. Gaige George placed eighth.

United’s Ryleigh Ludwig won the girls’ race with a time of 23:08, giving United five runners among the top eight finishers. Eden Bloom took second, Hannah Rensko placed fifth, Michelle Bloom finished sixth, and Britton Bracken took eighth.

Taylor Koches took third to guide Blairsville. Allison Smathers placed fourth.

Cassie McCoy placed seventh to lead Purchase Line.

United, Blairsville and Purchase Line will compete at the Indiana County Meet on IUP’s South Campus course a week from today.


LIGONIER VALLEY BOYS SCORE WIN: The Ligonier Valley boys’ team defeated Homer-Center, 22-33, in Homer City.

Sam Maust won the boys’ race with a time of 20:41 for Ligonier Valley. Tanner Solich placed third, Kyle Lundquist took fourth, Nate Hockenberry finished sixth, and Evan McNulty placed eighth.

Logan Pollock led Homer-Center with a second-place finish. Joey Popovich placed fifth, Ben Wolford took seventh, Patrick Clark finished ninth and Michael Sweeney placed 10th.

Heather Paynter won the girls’ race with a time of 21:54 for Homer-Center, but there was no team scoring because Homer-Center didn’t field enough runners.

Steph Heming placed second to pace Ligonier Valley, which claimed every place from second to ninth.

Also placing in the top 10 for the Rams were Olivia Miller (third), Gina McKlveen (fourth), Rachel Allison (fifth), Jasmine Conner (sixth), Ari Tutino (seventh), Hannah Patrick (eighth) and Elizabeth Keller (ninth).

Ligonier Valley and Homer-Center travel to the Indiana County Meet a week from today.


MARION CENTER SWEEPS: Host Marion Center swept Northern Cambria and Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference triangular meet.

The Marion Center boys’ team beat Northern Cambria, 23-38.

On the girls’ side, Marion Center defeated Northern Cambria, 20-47, and Penns Manor, 15-48.

The Northern Cambria girls’ team beat Penns Manor, 20-38.

Kyle Anderson led the Marion Center boys’ team with a second-place finish. Other placewinners were David Wiles (fifth), John Mabon (sixth), Maverick Stuchell (seventh), Nathan Alabran (eighth) and J.J. Brendle (10th).

Penns Manor’s J.T. Horwat won the boys’ race with a time of 17:58. Kyle Templeton finished ninth.

Chris Woodley placed third to guide Northern Cambria. C.J. Weirwiora finished fourth.

Hannah Fulton won the girls’ race with a time of 21:18 for Marion Center. Other placewinners were Tia Whitfield (third), Kate Olson (fourth), Alex Oterson (fifth), Bailey Cribbs (sixth), Miriah Sinan (eighth) and Matty Betts (ninth).

Ally Kopera finished second to pace Northern Cambria. Adriana Frontino placed 10th.

Morgan Johnston finished seventh to pace Penns Manor.

Marion Center, Penns Manor and Northern Cambria each travel to the Indiana County Meet a week from today.
