H.S. FOOTBALL: Purchase Line 28, Marion Center 16
MARION CENTER — Grant Syster ran for 279 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-clinching 84-yarder with 3:06 to play, and Purchase Line pulled away from Marion Center late in a Heritage Conference football game Friday.
After taking a 21-0 lead early in the second half, Purchase Line had trouble hanging on to the ball on a wet night, and Marion Center crept back into the game.
Marion Center sophomore quarterback Craig Irvin hit Noah Hoover for a 13-yard touchdown pass, and the two connected again on the two-point conversion to bring the Stingers within 21-16 with 6:00 to play.
Purchase Line fumbled on the first play after the ensuing kickoff, and Marion Center took over at the Red Dragons’ 35-yard line. But a costly holding penalty on first down was too much for the Stingers to overcome and they punted.
Two plays later, Syster capped his huge night by going around left end for an 84-yard touchdown to put the game away.
Syster opened the scoring with an 11-yard run with 7:00 to play in the first quarter, and Gavin Ewing had a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown with 3:16 to play in the first half as Purchase Line took a 14-0 lead into halftime.
On their first possession of the second half, the Red Dragons needed just three plays to cover 63 yards, and Todd Greene’s 30-yard run on an end around gave Purchase Line a 21-0 lead just 3:03 into the second half.
On their next possession, the Dragons were forced to punt, but the low snap got by Royce Bish, setting up Marion Center inside the Purchase Line 20-yard line.
Two plays later, Hoover scored on a 14-yard run to get Marion Center on the board with 3:07 to play in the third quarter.
