Casey McGowan notched her first career hat trick to lead IUP to a 3-2 win over Slippery Rock in a women’s field hockey match at Miller Stadium on Wednesday.
McGowan scored three straight times to give IUP a 3-1 lead midway through the second half after the Crimson Hawks fell behind 1-0 in the early going.
McGowan’s first goal tied the game 1-1 in the 31st minute, less than four minutes before halftime. She gave IUP its first lead 10 minutes into the second half, and she made it 3-1 less than four minutes later. Chelsea Wanamaker assisted on both of McGowan’s second-half goals.
Lindsay Brown scored both of Slippery Rock’s (3-6) goals.
IUP outshot Slippery Rock 16-4 and piled up 17 penalty corners to the Rock’s four.
IUP (3-6) won its second straight game following a six-game losing streak. The Crimson Hawks play host to Shippensburg on Saturday.
SOCCER: IUP’s winless streak reached five matches after the Crimson Hawks dropped a 2-0 decision at West Chester in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women’s soccer match Wednesday.
Following a scoreless first half, West Chester got goals from Lexi Brown and Carly Yost 13½ minutes apart in the second half to pull away from IUP. West Chester (6-3, 5-3 PSAC) won its fifth straight game, a stretch during which the Golden Rams have given up one goal.
Meanwhile, IUP has scored just three goals and gone 0-4-1 since starting the season 4-1. The Hawks’ lone non-losing result in that stretch was a 2-2 tie with Mansfield on Sept. 27.
IUP (4-5-1, 3-5-1 PSAC) plays host to East Stroudsburg on Saturday.
