RUFFSDALE (AP) — State police say a western Pennsylvania man jailed on charges he fatally shot a man in his friend’s driveway tried to hire a fellow inmate to kill the homeowner, who police say is also a witness.
The defense attorney for Lee Atwood, 54, of Irwin, declined to comment on the new charges first reported Thursday by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Atwood was to be arraigned on charges of conspiracy and solicitation to commit murder.
Police said he offered a fellow Westmoreland County Prison inmate $1,500 to kill the friend of the victim, 46-year-old George Williams. Police said the inmate was soon to be released from jail.
Police say Atwood shot Williams after he went to a house in South Huntingdon Township to collect the debt on Aug. 12.
