4-H Fundraiser

Raising more than $2,000 in the Tractor Supply Paper Clover Campaign this spring put Indiana 4-H clubs in one of the top spots in the nation.

The area’s 4-H clubs will have the chance to try to do that again during the fall campaign, which runs from Wednesday through Oct. 20 at Tractor Supply on Shelly Drive in White Township.

Tractor Supply customers will be able to make a $1 or $5 donation at the checkout in exchange for a paper clover to hang in the store.

Area 4-H clubs may be setting up in a similar way to how they did earlier in the year, offering free hot dogs, cupcakes and other goodies as a thank-you to those buying the clovers.

That proved to be a recipe for success. Indiana County 4-H clubs raised $2,040 during the spring clover campaign — efforts that put them sixth in donations in the nation.

The Indiana area campaign was the only effort in the state to reach the top 10 this year.

“I think the fact that we placed sixth was pretty good,” said Carol Schurman, a Penn State Cooperative Extension educator who works with the 4-H clubs.

The local Tractor Supply’s spring drive beat out more than 1,000 participating stores. Stores taking part in the campaign raised nearly $510,000 for state, county and national 4-H programs.

Schurman credits the hard work of 4-H members, their loved ones and those at the store.

“Basically, we had to get kids, members and parents in the store as much as we could,” she said. “Many of the store clerks are very good, too, so I give Tractor Supply credit, too.”
