GREENSBURG — Unbeaten Greensburg Central Catholic (14-0) put an end to a superb season for the Indiana girls’ tennis team Monday.
The Indians, the Section 4-AA champions, lost each of their singles matches to fall to the Centurions, 4-1, in a WPIAL Class AA quarterfinal-round playoff match at the Greensburg Racquet Club.
The No. 2 doubles team of Margaux Marcus and Eugina Chin won in straight sets for Indiana. The No. 1 doubles team of Kate Palko and Kylie Horvath lost to Kate Bryan and Eryka Verenna, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Indiana’s No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, Lucy Bujdos and Megan Clawson, lost in straight sets. Carly Morrow, the Indians’ No. 3 singles player, lost to Jordan Smithberger, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-1.
“The girls played really well against a team that is undefeated and second seeded in the tournament, and we actually had them on the ropes for a while,” Indiana coach Ray Goss said. “But give Greensburg Central Catholic credit; they came back when the chips were down.”
Indiana, which finished 10-0 in section matches, concluded its season with a 13-2 mark.
