KENWOOD — Penns Manor did its part to set up a head-to-head showdown for the Heritage Conference championship, defeating Purchase Line Friday night at Pat Corrigan Field to improve to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the conference.
The Comets visit Homer-Center (8-0, 7-0) next Friday, and the winner takes home the conference title.
Penns Manor looked like a team preoccupied, coming off a last-second win at Ligonier Valley and looking toward Homer-Center, as Purchase Line outplayed the Comets in the first quarter and took a 7-0 lead on Grant Syster’s 1-yard run.
Penns Manor scored 28 unanswered points, though, on four touchdown runs by quarterback Lucas Kowalski, who played after suffering a knee injury late in last week’s game at Ligonier.
The first score, a 3-yard run, came on Penns Manor’s first possession of the second quarter, and the teams were set to go into the half tied at 7. A late hit on Kowalski aided Penns Manor late in the half, though, and the senior took advantage, hitting Nathan Dumm for a 24-yard pass that set up Kowalski’s 1-yard run to give the Comets a 14-7 lead.
Kowalski scored twice more on short runs in the second half.
Todd Greene scored on a 56-yard run late in the fourth for the Red Dragons.
Penns Manor held Purchase Line to 79 yards rushing while gaining 162. Kowalski was 5 of 10 passing for 100 yards.
For Purchase Line, Alec Sunderlin was 6 of 15 passing for 27 yards, and two other Dragons completed passes.
Purchase Line (3-5) saw its two-game winning streak end. The Dragons play host to Saltsburg next week.
