HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Northern Cambria senior provides lift on emotional Senior Night
Senior Night was an extra-special occasion for one Northern Cambria senior in particular.
Kelly Lieb, who suffered a stroke last summer, made her return to the volleyball court to play in the Colts’ 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 victory over Purchase Line in a Heritage Conference girls’ volleyball match Thursday night at Ted Keenan Memorial Gym.
“It was just an awesome, awesome scene for her to get in there tonight,” Northern Cambria coach Mike Hogan said.
Lieb earned all-district honors as Northern Cambria’s starting libero as a junior last year. She played in Games 1 and 2 Thursday.
“Everybody was so excited to see her back in the lineup,” Hogan said. “The doctors cleared her and we got her out there for her Senior Night. There are some things more important than volleyball, and that’s definitely one of them.”
Lakyn Fornari led Northern Cambria with 15 kills and Renee Paronish added five. Alyssa Walters dished out 18 assists and Paige Benton scored 15 service points.
Jaycelyn Fleming led Purchase Line with seven kills and three blocks.
“The middle hitter for Purchase Line played a really nice game,” Hogan said of Fleming. “She’s a nice player.”
Amy Elling had 18 assists and Mikhala Stover had five kills and five digs.
Purchase Line won the junior varsity match, 25-20, 18-25, 18-16.
Both teams play Tuesday. Northern Cambria (13-2) travels to Ligonier Valley, and Purchase Line (6-9) welcomes United.
PENNS MANOR 3, LIGONIER VALLEY 1: Penns Manor came from behind and outlasted Ligonier Valley, 14-25, 25-22, 31-29, 25-11, in a wild Heritage Conference showdown in Kenwood as the Comets avenged a loss to the Rams earlier this season.
Sarah DaBella had 14 kills and Heather Aikens had 13 to lead the Comets. Mary Roach added seven kills and Taylor Rainey had six. Mallory Drahnak tallied 39 assists.
Ligonier Valley won the junior varsity match, 16-25, 25-19, 15-12.
Penns Manor (12-2) plays host to Altoona on Monday. Ligonier Valley (12-4) welcomes Northern Cambria on Tuesday.
HOMER-CENTER 3, UNITED 0: Homer-Center swept United, 25-15, 27-25, 25-19, in a Heritage Conference match in Armagh.
Abby Plowcha made six kills for the Wildcats. Alexis Leysock distributed 15 assists.
United won the junior varsity match, 13-25, 25-18, 15-8.
Both teams play Tuesday. Homer-Center (2-12) plays host to Marion Center, and United visits Purchase Line.
BLAIRSVILLE 3, MARION CENTER 1: Blairsville scored a road victory, 19-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-18 over Marion Center in a Heritage Conference match. No further details were reported.
The Bobcats won the junior varsity match, 25-21, 25-22.
Both teams play Tuesday. Blairsville (7-6) welcomes Penns Manor, and Marion Center visits Homer-Center.
WEST SHAMOKIN 3, LEECHBURG 0: West Shamokin finished its regular season at 11-1, both overall and in WPIAL Section 1-A play, sharing co-champion honors with Greensburg Central Catholic after beating Leechburg, 25-14, 25-17, 25-19, in a section match in NuMine.
Amanda Wensel made seven kills and Alecia Calhoun had five. Sierra Dailey had 23 assists.
West Shamokin will participate in the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart tournament on Saturday and learn its WPIAL playoff pairing after the seeding meeting on Monday.
BETHEL CHRISTIAN 3, CALVARY BAPTIST 1: Calvary Baptist took a 25-14, 25-18, 21-25, 25-13 loss in a non-section match in West Aliquippa.
Megan Plants had 15 kills and three aces to lead the Patriots. Erica Stephens scored eight service points, and Kayla Chambers had five kills.
Calvary Baptist (6-5) plays host to Bible Baptist on Tuesday.
