SOCCER: IUP scored twice in the final 15 minutes of the game to pull away late for a 3-0 win over Clarion in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women’s soccer match Saturday in Clarion.
Brittney Kuhns scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season with about 13½ minutes to play to give IUP a 2-0 lead, and Kelsey Fisher made it 3-0 with under 9 minutes to play.
Kaitlyn Kaminski scored in the 14th minute to give IUP a 1-0 lead that stood until halftime.
Goalkeeper Mara Hricik made two saves and played all but 2:13 of the 90-minute match in goal.
IUP held a dominating 22-4 edge in shots, including 12-2 in shots on goal. IUP also held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
IUP (7-6-1) won its second straight game by shutout and climbed into 10th place in the PSAC standings with four games remaining. The top eight teams in the conference make the playoffs.
The Crimson Hawks welcome Gannon on Tuesday.
GOLF: Seeking its seventh straight PSAC title, the IUP men’s golf team sits in third place after the first day of the conference championships.
Zack Kempa and Kenneth Sames finished the first day of competition in the top 10 individually to lead IUP.
Kempa carded a 73 and sits in a fourth-place tie, three strokes behind individual leader Rob Rowe, of Millersville. Sames shot a 74 and is tied for eighth after the first day.
Also competing for IUP were Brett Geiser (75, T-13th); Max Kirsch (76, T-19th); and Jack Owen (80; T-30th).
As a team, IUP shot a 298 and sits five strokes behind leader Millersville (293) and two strokes behind second-place West Chester (296).
VOLLEYBALL: IUP wrapped up a successful weekend by splitting a pair of matches in PSAC crossover action Saturday.
IUP outlasted Kutztown in a five-set thriller, 3-2, in the afternoon match, bouncing back from a 3-0 loss to West Chester earlier in the day.
IUP rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat Kutztown by scores of 18-25, 27-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-13. Elizabeth Sova had 19 kills and Lisa Kissell added 15. Lindsay Moeller had 49 assists, and Kelly Barnes led the defense with 14 digs.
Against West Chester, IUP lost by scores of 27-25, 26-24, 25-18.
Sova and Stephanie Kruzynski had 10 kills apiece.
IUP went 3-1 over the weekend to improve to 7-17 (4-9 PSAC).
The Crimson Hawks welcome Shepherd on Tuesday for a non-conference match.
