HARMONY — David Zimmerman scored a goal seven minutes into the second half to lift 12th-seeded Indiana to a 1-0 win over fifth-seeded Blackhawk in a WPIAL Class AA first-round boys’ soccer playoff match Monday at Seneca Valley High School.
“It was an awesome match,” 18th-year Indiana coach Todd Myers said. “We felt like we were the underdog and the pressure was on them. The longer the match went scoreless, the more it worked in our favor. We just kept putting more and more pressure on them.”
Indiana’s Peter Short made a nifty pass inside the penalty box to Zimmerman, who dribbled to his right and then bent a shot with his right foot into the upper-right corner of the goal.
“It’s a shot he’s done several times this year,” Myers said of Zimmerman, who scored a school-record 20 goals in the regular season. “We had been pressing for a little bit. Good players come up with great goals at the right time. David just coolly collected Pete’s pass in the 18. He then turned, beat a defender, and then put another defender on his heels before taking his shot.”
Indiana goalie Corey Denlinger made six saves.
The Indians, who won a first-round playoff match for the third straight season, broke a school record for wins with 15.
Indiana (15-3-1) takes on Shady Side Academy on Thursday at 8 p.m., at Mars High School.
