H.S. FOOTBALL: Portage 38, Blairsville 6
BLAIRSVILLE — Blairsville’s playoff hopes took a hit with a loss to Portage in a non-conference game Friday at Memorial Stadium.
Blairsville drove the ball inside the Mustangs’ 10-yard line on its opening drive, but the Bobcats couldn’t score on four tries from the 9-yard line and turned the ball over on downs.
Portage (7-1) scored on its next three possessions to take a 21-0 lead and never looked back.
Blairsville (5-4) briefly gained some momentum late in the first half, when Scott Thompson connected with Colton McMillan for a 9-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-6 with 1:10 left in the second quarter.
But the Bobcats gave up a 72-yard return on the ensuing kickoff, and Portage got the ball at the Blairsville 10-yard line with just under a minute to play in the half. Two plays later, the Mustangs did what the Bobcats couldn’t — punch it in from close range — and they took a 28-6 halftime lead.
Portage added 10 points in the third quarter to pull away for its second straight blowout of the Bobcats. Portage won last year’s meeting 41-24.
Scott Thompson completed 12 of 29 pass attempts for 148 yards with two interceptions. The Bobcats, who finished with 159 rushing yards, also fumbled twice and finished with four turnovers.
Blairsville is not out of the playoff picture yet, though. Ranked ninth in this week’s District 6 Class A rankings, the Bobcats need a win over Moshannon Valley next week and some help, but they remain in the playoff hunt.
