MARION CENTER AREA: School directors applaud Enviroquest success

MARION CENTER — The Marion Center Area school directors and administrators Monday congratulated the 30 students in grades 5 to 12 who made another impressive showing at the annual Enviroquest competition.

The Marion Center teams won 17 awards in the environmental knowledge-based competition held Oct. 18 at the Jennings Environmental Center near Slippery Rock. The Marion Center teams won two first place overall and two second place overall awards as well as several individual category awards.

At its brief meeting Monday the school board also accepted the donation of playground equipment for the W.A. McCreery Elementary School from the McCreery PTA and Akers National Roll Steel, in Avonmore, and the company’s union employees. Elementary Principal Donna Bruder-Smith said the playground equipment, suitable for pre-K students, is valued at about $13,000.

The directors also approved an overnight trip by the Air Force JrROTC Color Guard to present the colors on March 21 and 22, 2014, at the PIAA Basketball Championship games in Hershey.

In other action, the board:

• Approved a supplemental contract with Stephanie Canton to be the assistant swim coach at a salary of $3,250.

• Added Craig Bytner, Shenna Stefano and Keith Reiter to the professional substitute list.

• Added the following people to the elementary volunteer list: Angela Boring, Erika Cooper, Krista LaMorte, Amy Shellhammer, Melissa Leasure, Douglas McCausland, Kourtney Shay, Jennifer Knox, Maria Patterson and Judy Schurr.
