BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Florida Atlantic coach Carl Pelini and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis resigned after acknowledging to university officials that they had used illegal drugs.
FAU received information about the allegations of drug use Monday, athletic director Patrick Chun said. An investigation began immediately and Chun confronted the coaches on Wednesday, a day when law enforcement officials also visited the school’s athletic offices.
Police arrest goalie Varlamov
DENVER (AP) — Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov surrendered to Denver police on an arrest warrant on charges of kidnapping and third-degree assault in what authorities are calling a domestic violence incident.
Police released few details about the case during a brief news conference Wednesday night and declined to elaborate, other than to say it involved someone who Varlamov was in an intimate relationship with.
Sgt. Steve Warneke said the 25-year-old Russian goalie went to police at about 6 p.m. Warneke didn’t know if Varlamov had an attorney.
Analyst says he made a mistake
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee said he made a mistake in comparing Tiger Woods’ rules violation to his own episode of cheating on a fourth-grade math test and that he would stop writing for the website where his column appeared.
“I said Tiger Woods was cavalier about the rules. I should have stopped right there,” Chamblee said Wednesday night in his first appearance on Golf Channel since his column was posted to golf.com nearly two weeks ago.
Bach: Athletes will be treated equally
MOSCOW (AP) — IOC President Thomas Bach is confident that all athletes and visitors at the Winter Olympics in Sochi will be treated equally regardless of “race, gender or sexual orientation.”
Bach said he received new assurances from Russian President Vladimir Putin that gays will not be discriminated against in Sochi.
U.S. ties with New Zealand
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Hannah Wilkinson, twice denied on near goals, chipped in a 15-yard shot in the 87th minute to allow New Zealand to forge a 1-1 draw with the United States in a soccer exhibition at Crew Stadium.
Syndey Leroux scored in the 42nd minute for the Americans.
Nadal advances in Paris
PARIS (AP) — Top-seeded Rafael Nadal advanced to the third round of the Paris Masters and Roger Federer qualified for the ATP Finals for a 12th straight year.
Nadal beat Marcel Granollers 7-5, 7-5 in an all-Spanish meeting, and Federer topped Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4.
• GENEVA (AP) — Martina Hingis has been questioned by Swiss police after her estranged husband said he was attacked by the five-time Grand Slam champion and her family.
Hingis, her mother Melanie Molitor and her mother’s boyfriend Mario Widmer were interviewed at Schwyz canton police headquarters last week, police spokesman Florian Grossmann said Wednesday.
