GIRL OF THE MONTH: Bethany Balencic

Bethany Lynn Balencic, 17, has been named the Indiana Junior Women Civic Club Girl of the Month for October.

Bethany is the daughter of Jeff and Gina Balencic, of Indiana, and attends Indiana Area Senior High School. She is a member of the Key Club, where she serves as Web editor and a member of the executive board, and Kiva, where she serves as vice president. She is a senior class representative and participates in leadership class. She has performed an elementary internship at East Pike and is a former member of the Athena Club, where she had served as a member of the executive board and as president. She also formerly was a member of the band.

In the Key Club, Bethany participated in Thon, Spirit Day, Battle of the Faculties, Battle of the Classes, Gardening at Mack Park, Slimefest/All Sports Day, SCORE, the Christmas parade, pen-pals and bell-ringing for the Salvation Army. She has chaired events for Athena, including the annual 5K Pick-A-Cause Run/Walk and bell-ringing for the Salvation Army.

Bethany has lettered twice in cross country and twice in softball. Also in softball, she has received honors as Rookie of the Year in 10th grade and Most Improved Defensive Player in 11th grade, and she received the Sportsmanship Award in 11th grade. She was a member of the All-Gazette cross country team in ninth and 11th grades, and received the Melissa “Missy” Johnson Memorial Award in eighth grade in basketball. She also plays softball for the YMCA and played volleyball in grades seven and eight.

In the community, Bethany is a member of the St. Thomas More University Parish and Catholic Student Center, where she has been an altar server and a member of the youth group and has volunteered sorting food and the book fair. She is a member of Younglife and has volunteered to separate Love Basket collections yearly as well as collect money outside of BiLo for Make a Difference Day.

Her hobbies include cooking, baking, reading, running, working out and working with children.

In the future, Bethany plans to attend college to major in early childhood and special education.
