HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Teams get pairings for Friday playoff games

Four Heritage Conference football teams will open the District 6 playoffs this weekend, two at home and two on the road.

Homer-Center (9-1), the second seed in the Class A bracket, will play host to Juniata Valley (6-4), the seventh seed, on Friday. Penns Manor (9-1), the fourth seed, will welcome Bishop Guilfoyle (8-2), the fifth seed and winner of eight straight games, on Saturday night.

Blairsville (6-4), which claimed the eighth and final seed, will play at Portage (8-1), the No. 1 seed, on Friday. Portage beat Blairsville, 38-6, in a regular-season game in Week 8. The Mustangs have won seven straight games, including a 38-19 win over Homer-Center on Friday that spoiled the Wildcats’ unbeaten season.

The other game in the Class A bracket has Bishop Carroll (6-4), the sixth seed, at Bellwood-Antis (8-2), the third seed, on Saturday.

All playoff games begin at 7 p.m.

In the Class AA bracket, Ligonier Valley (6-4) goes into the playoffs on a four-game losing streak and will visit top-seeded Richland (10-0) on Friday. The Rams are ranked third in the state.

In the other Class AA game Friday, Mount Union (second seed, 9-1) will play host to Forest Hills (seventh, 6-4). On Saturday, Tyrone (fourth, 8-2) will play host to Bald Eagle Area (fifth, 6-4), and Central Martinsburg (third, 8-2) will play host to Central Cambria (sixth, 6-4).

Two local WPIAL teams also will be in action Friday.

Indiana, a 28-14 winner over Ringgold in the first round, will take on West Allegheny at 7:30 p.m., at North Hills High School in the Class AAA bracket. Indiana (5-5) is the ninth seed, and West Allegheny (10-0) is the top seed. West Allegheny, ranked fifth in state, beat Hollidaysburg 38-6 in the first round.

In Class A, Apollo-Ridge (8-2) will play Sto-Rox (9-1) at 7:30 p.m., at Deer Lakes High School. Apollo-Ridge, the ninth seed, advanced by beating Beth-Center 42-28 in the first round, and Sto-Rox (10-0), the top seed, beat Avella 36-7. Sto-Rox is ranked fourth in the state.
