Shown here is an American “doughboy,” Orville Hayward, address unknown, in a typical U.S. uniform with his rifle.

On April 6, 1917, the U.S. Congress called for a declaration of war against Germany, and the U.S. entered World War I as an “associated power.”

When this great war ended on Nov. 11, 1918, Armistice Day, more than 4 million American soldiers had served with some 325,000 casualties, according to county historian John Busovicki, of Clymer, who submitted this photo.
