Red Kettle Breakfast to kick off Salvation Army's fundraising season

The Indiana County Salvation Army will begin its annual Red Kettle campaign with the annual kickoff breakfast and auction at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Indiana Country Club.

There will be more than 60 gift baskets valued at more than $8,000 up for grabs in a silent auction. The baskets contain a variety of donated goods and services, including Steelers and Penguins tickets, signed sports memorabilia, a Kindle Fire, spa and massage gift certificates, a Keuring coffee maker, restaurant and retail gift cards, Vera Bradley items and golf packages.

The live auction, a tradition started in 2011, will continue this year with items valued at more than $10,000. The live auction will begin at 8:45 a.m.

Items being offered this year include:

• Ten tickets to “Disney Live: Three Classic Fairy Tales” and a catered meal at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex on Dec. 8. Donated by IUP and Global Spectrum, this package includes use of the KCAC’s private alumni suite and the catered meal.

• A gift package to Renaissance Hotel in Pittsburgh.

• A “Wicked” show dinner and hotel package, donated by First Commonwealth Bank.

• Dinner for eight at Taze Ristorante, donated by Levent and Mary Beth Akbay.

• An autographed and framed photograph of Sidney Crosby. The photograph shows Crosby after scoring the winning goal at the 2008 NHL Winter Classic.

• Four tickets to a Pittsburgh Penguins game, donated by S&T Bank. A parking pass is included.

• A 1962 Nicholas Volpe sketch of Jimmy Stewart, signed and framed.

• A “Behind the Scenes with the Bus” day, donated by S&T Bank. The package includes a tour of WPXI-TV, a catered lunch for six, private viewing of the taping of the “Jerome Bettis Show” and a meet-and-greet with the retired Steelers running back.

The majority of The Salvation Army’s outreach budget comes from the money raised through the kettle campaign. The money is used throughout the year to help members of the community, said Kathleen Mack, co-chairwoman of the organization’s fundraising committee. In addition to providing families with food, clothing, financial assistance with utility bills, and academic tutoring, The Salvation Army also provides on-site assistance to emergency crews at fires and disaster scenes.

“In the last three years, one out of four Indiana County residents were assisted in some way by The Salvation Army,” said Mack. “It is not just about gifts for the holiday season — need truly knows no season.”

Mack said that in the past year, the organization has seen a significant increase in the number of people requesting services. Many, she said, have been asking for help buying groceries.

“Because of the generosity of this community, we can continue to serve the needs of Indiana County,” Mack said. The event is open to the community, and donations are being accepted.
