On Wednesday, members of Jim Nance’s family witnessed the unanimous passage of House Bill 1665, designating a portion of State Route 4007 (North Fifth Street) as the “James Nance Memorial Highway.” When the governor signs this into law, it will mark the culmination of a project initiated by Carl Kologie.
Most readers know Carl from his longstanding affiliation with the Gazette, as well as his tireless contributions as a civic leader. A founding member of the Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame and former president of that organization, Carl is the quintessential sports fan — a walking compendium of team and individual stats. No doubt, it was Carl’s appreciation for outstanding athletes that led him to spearhead a movement to rename North Fifth Street in recognition of a phenomenal hometown athlete. A heartfelt thank you goes out from the Nance family to Carl for his efforts!
In addition, let me take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the “James Nance Boulevard” Committee: Bill Simmons, Pat Snyder, Richard Malacarne, Doug Steve, Rod Ruddock, Jerry Kozusko and Chuck Spadafora. Thank you to Sen. Don White for sponsoring Senate Bill 1097 and to Rep. Dave Reed, not only for introducing the House bill, but also for graciously welcoming members of Jim’s family to his Harrisburg office and the House floor.
Lastly, let me thank those friends and community members who have shared with me over the years their support of a memorial to Jim. I know my brother would feel honored that the street running past his alma mater and his boyhood home will bear his name.
Dr. Drew Nance
