Host Knoch turned a tight game into a blowout in the second half and handed Indiana its first loss of the season, 52-37, in a WPIAL Section 1-AAA boys’ basketball game Friday.
David Gallagher hit three 3-point field goals in the third quarter and sparked a 9-3 run at the end of the quarter that put the Knights ahead by seven points, 36-29.
Gallagher, who finished with five 3s, scored six of his game-high 20 points in the fourth to help Knoch outscore Indiana, 16-8.
Kevin Jack scored a team-high 11 points for Indiana. Riley Stapleton added nine points.
Indiana (6-1, 1-1 section) takes on Penns Grove (N.J.) in the first round of the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood, N.J., next Saturday.
HOMER-CENTER 47, PUNXSUTAWNEY 38: Unbeaten Homer-Center won a defensive struggle and hit 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away from Punxsutawney for a win in a non-conference game at the HomerDome.
Darren Carr scored six points in the fourth quarter, and Joe Capitosti added five, and the Wildcats broke open a tied game by outscoring the Chucks, 19-10. Homer-Center hit 10 of 17 free throws in the fourth.
“They’re a scrappy team,” Homer-Center assistant coach Rickey Miller said of the Chucks. “We played great defense and coming away with a win against a quality team like Punxsutawney was exactly what we needed heading into the Richland tournament.”
Capitosti led all scorers with 19 points, and John Capitosti chipped in 11 points.
Tyler Young scored nine points to lead the Chucks.
Both teams play next Friday. Homer-Center (7-0) takes on Tussey Mountain in the first round of the Richland Holiday Classic, and Punxsutawney plays host to Penn Cambria in the first round of the Carl Truance Holiday Classic.
SUMMIT ACADEMY 75, APOLLO-RIDGE 67: Apollo-Ridge allowed huge bursts in the first and fourth quarters and surrendered a season-high in points to suffer its first loss in a WPIAL Section 1-AA game to Summit Academy.
The Knights racked up 23 points in the first quarter and held a five-point halftime lead, 38-33.
Apollo-Ridge came out of halftime strong and outscored Summit Academy, 19-11, in the third quarter to carry a three-point lead, 52-49, into the fourth quarter.
But the high-scoring Knights pulled away in the fourth quarter and outscored the Vikings, 26-15, to seal the win.
Tre Tipton scored a team-high 20 points for Apollo-Ridge. Freshman Duane Brown added 18 points, Mitchell Johnston had 15, and Alex Smith chipped in 12.
Apollo-Ridge (6-1, 0-1) takes on Saltsburg in the first round of the Apollo Trust Company Christmas Tournament next Friday.
